Awards Program

Alberta Artistic Swimming annually recognizes individuals and clubs within our sport. The Awards Program was recently updated in December of 2018. Awards, in the following categories are presented at our Aquatic Awards Banquet.

Athletes

Provincial 9-10 Athlete of the Year
The Alberta athlete competing in the Provincial Stream and receiving the most points based on performance at pre-determined sanctioned meets.
Provincial 11-12 Athlete of the Year
The Alberta athlete competing in the Provincial Stream and receiving the most points based on performance at pre-determined sanctioned meets.
National 13-15 Athlete of the Year
The Alberta athlete competing in the 13-15 age category at the National Stream and receiving the most points based on performance at pre-determined sanctioned meets.
National Junior (15-18) Athlete of the Year
The Alberta athlete competing in the Junior age category at the National Stream and receiving the most points based on performance at pre-determined sanctioned meets.
National Senior (18+) Athlete of the Year
The Alberta athlete competing in the Senior age category at the National Stream and receiving the most points based on performance at pre-determined sanctioned meets.

• Athlete awards are based on the age of the competitor and not the age group they swim in.
• Athletes who swim in multiple age categories will score their points for the youngest age category in which they are eligible. Athletes will have their points combined across age groups with the exception of figures. Figure points will only be awarded once in the youngest age category in which they compete.
• A minimum of three (3) swimmers must be in a category before points are awarded and will score points relative to entries.
• Points will be awarded as per the Alberta Artistic Swimming Points system based on performance at Provincial Qualifier, Wildrose Qualifier, Provincials, Wildrose Classic, Divisionals and Nationals, as applicable.
• Points will be awarded for figures, routines (ranking by routine score) and tech routines.
• The top six (6) point earners will be provided to the Awards Selection Committee for the final selection of winners.

Coaches

Most Promising Coach
An Alberta Coach that has coached for no more than two years in the competitive program and receives the highest point total based on their swimmers’ performance at meets as per the Alberta Artistic Swimming point system. This coach must be minimally trained at the Competition Introduction Coach level and has coached for no more than two years in the competitive program.

Recreational Coach of the Year
An Alberta Coach who coaches in the Recreational Stream. The coach must be minimally certified for the level at which they coach. Nominations will be accepted and assessed on the following criteria.

  • Professionalism Criteria (based on observations and information collected from their respective club)
    • Development – engagement in professionalism, ie. Attendance at Synchro Summit, NCCP development, other professional development opportunities within the season
    • Conduct – displays behavior on a consistent basis that is consistent with the Alberta Artistic Swimming Code of Conduct
    • Engagement – positively works within their club to grow the sport and support the Board and other coaches

Competitive Coach of the Year
An Alberta Coach who coaches any or both of the Provincial and/or National Stream. The coach must be minimally certified for the level at which they coach. The following criteria will be used to determine the top 6 candidates on a performance basis and the top 6 will then be further evaluated based on aspects of professionalism to determine a winner. This information will be requested of their respective club President.

  • Performance Criteria (based on the Alberta Artistic Swimming performance point system for athletes)
    • A minimum of three (3) swimmers must be in a category before points are awarded
    • Based on points of athletes achieving top 6 results at the Wildrose Classic Qualifier, Wildrose Classic, National Qualifier and Nationals
    • Points will be awarded for figures, routines (ranking by routine score only) and tech routines
  • Professionalism Criteria (based on observations and information collected from their respective club)
    • Development – engagement in professionalism, ie. Attendance at Synchro Summit, NCCP development, other professional development opportunities within the season

Recognition

President’s Award
Recognizes outstanding contribution or accomplishment as determined by the Alberta Artistic Swimming President.

Outstanding Achievement
An Alberta athlete or coach who achieved a high level of success in the current season that has not already been accounted for in other awards may be recognized.

Volunteers

Board of Directors Award – Nominations accepted from any Alberta Artistic Swimming Board An Active volunteer who has provided 10 years or more of outstanding service and/or meritorious contributions to the sport at the Provincial and National Levels.

Official of the Year – Nominated by the Official’s Chair
Awarded to an official who has judged or refereed at a variety of meets during the current season. It acknowledges an official who is continually learning and expanding their knowledge and sharing it with others.
• Nominee is recommended by the Official’s Chair.

Club Volunteer of the Year
An active volunteer whose efforts have produced specific positive results in the club. An individual whose contributions reflect passion for the sport and its’ participants as an exemplary role model for others.
• Given to an active volunteer whose efforts have produced specific, positive results in the club.
• An individual whose contributions reflect passion for the sport, and its’ participants as an exemplary role model for others.
• Nominees can be submitted by any Alberta Artistic Swimming member.
• Current Alberta Artistic Swimming Board members ineligible.
